Allowing Women More Rights Is Just Taliban Propaganda

After 20 years of progress, the Taliban has once again seized power in Afghanistan, and things have quickly unraveled for the women there.

Since the Taliban take-over in Afghanistan, they have made promises to allow women more rights than during their previous reign, “within Sharia law.” It’s already looking as though this is not going to be the case.

Lara Logan, a veteran foreign and war correspondent, gives an account of what life was like under Taliban rule.

“It is a long slow death,” she said. “If you’re unlucky. If you’re lucky, you’ll just be slaughtered quickly, because that is what life is like for women under the Taliban, a long slow death.”

“It is the end of freedom, it is the end of possibility. It is the end of hope,” Logan said. “It is the end of light.”

“It is the beginning of a life of possible sexual slavery, which is a nice way of saying being raped every day by a man you don’t love,” she continued. “Being denied the ability to love. You are denied the ability to have your own family. To have privacy. To have a dream.”

When Kabul fell to the Afghans in 2001, the city hadn’t seen the face of a woman in more than eight years, Logan told Fox News.

In the past 20 years, with the help of the United States, girls have been allowed an education, and women have been allowed to work and have more rights.

Logan claims that when the Taliban says it will be more permissive with women as long as it is within the bounds of Sharia law, what they are not telling you is what that entails.

“What they’re not saying is will they allow women to work, will they allow women to be treated by a male doctor, will they allow young girls to go to high school,” she added. “No, no is the answer.”

Logan told of an interview she had with a Taliban commander in the back seat of a car.

“He was looking through the window of the car and there were two Afghan women waiting to cross the road and they had the full hijab on but their faces were not covered by the burka,” Logan said. The commander began “spewing vitriol, hatred” then told Logan, “if you were not here right now, I would kill those women myself.”

“They have dishonored me, they have dishonored Allah, they have dishonored the Taliban, they have dishonored the Islamic Emirate, I am filthy right now,” the Taliban commander told her.

Reports are already pouring in of women being terrorized since the recent take-over. Two Afghan female journalists report they’ve been barred from their newsrooms and hid in fear of being killed by the Taliban. Both women live in fear of being found and killed. There’s another report of a pregnant woman being killed in front of her husband and children upon returning from her job.

Logan said the Taliban’s promises to allow women more freedoms than they had during their previous rule are just “propaganda talking points as agreed upon by its political masters and backers.”
